Sony released Android 7.0 (Nougat) for its late 2016 and later models in May 2017 but the software was postponed for all previous models. It took 10 additional months to make it happen in Europe. Android 7.0 (Nougat) was released in the US earlier this year.
Sony is the only TV manufacturer to continuously release software updates. With this update, all of Sony’s TVs can run Android 7.0. The company released its first Android TVs in 2015. Philips has also released Android updates for most of its TVs but had to abandon the first models due to a discountinued chipset platform.
”We are pleased to announce that a new firmware update (5.381) will be released directly to your TV on the 14th March 2018 and will roll out gradually throughout spring,” Sony announced. ”This firmware introduces Android 7.0 Nougat and new features, further enhancing the TV’s performance while improving on the existing functionalities.”
Picture-in-picture, Chromecast 4K
Sony said that Android 7.0 adds a number of Android–specific features including support for multiple Google account. It will also add picture-in-picture functionality.
The built-in Chromecast software will be updated to support 4K video resolution. It still lacks support for HDR and 50Hz content.
Included in the update is also support for HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma), which is a HDR format for live broadcast and streaming. HLG is now supported via HDMI, USB, DLNA and satellite TV, according to Sony.
The company has vowed to roll out Android 8.0 later but has yet to confirm details regarding supported models and availability. Android 8.0 will introduce a new TV user interface.
Sony started rolling out Android 7.0 in Europe on March 14 but it will take several weeks for it to reach all TVs. The software can be installed automatically via the menu or manually by downloading it from Sony’s support page and transfering to it USB: DOWNLOAD

This firmware update introduces Android Nougat to Sony's Android TV and supports:
- Picture-in-Picture mode
- Half-screen settings mode
- Task-switching (quickly access recently used apps)
- Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) HDR content for USB, DLNA and satellite TV (XD94, XD93, XD85, SD85, X93D, X94C, X93C, X91C, X90C, X85C, S85C series only)
- Google Cast 4K content via built-in Chromecast
- Voice search web browser functionality
- Samba Interactive TV service
- Multiple Google accounts
- Ability to switch to TV viewing mode from Home menu with PROG +/- or number buttons
- Improved "Discover" menu interface and navigation
- Improved Wi-Fi password input screen
- Improved usability when registering a USB HDD recording device
- Improved user interface when using a USB stick or HDD as an expandable storage device
This firmware also resolves other issues, such as a video on demand (VOD) playback issues where the video freezes or lip-sync errors occur.
